He loves farming but is not crazy about baseball. When cajoled to join the Hudson Hornet pony league baseball team by his best friend, Nicky Smith, he reluctantly agrees even though it means playing on a team that has not won a game for two years and usually gets beat by at least ten runs.Steve has always doubted his ability to be a good baseball player and would rather not play than be embarrassed by what he considers his inept playing skills. But as the season starts, Steve begins to gain confidence in his ability with the help of a new friend, Tony Sova. Tony is a scrawny kid who absolutely is the best baseball player for his age that anyone has ever seen and soon gets the nickname, The Hustle Kid.Tony has problems of his own with an estranged father and when Steve inadvertently says hurtful things to Tony, Steve wants to find a way to not only help Tony with his problems but to regain Tony’s friendship.Steve also finds his relationship with Nicky Smith’s delightful older sister Claire changing. Claire, a cute and outgoing blond, has loved to tease Steve for years but it seems now that their connection is forming into something more than just a friendship. As the baseball season draws to an end, Steve finds himself having to overcome his self-doubt and lack of confidence with baseball as he and the Hudson Hornets find themselves in a dramatic end-of-season race for a Pony League baseball championship.
